Purchased for $80,000 (PLUS GST) at the recent GOLD COAST MAGIC MILLIONS SALES this cracking daughter from one of Australia’s “hottest” stallions in FASTNET ROCK ticks all of the boxes to suggest that she will have every opportunity to make a name for herself when she graces the turf next year. A patchy sale in parts this year allowed the buying bench to see bargains not normally associated with a Magic Millions sale and this filly from a terrific young stallion I am proud to say was to me one of those bargains.FASTNET ROCK’S background gives him the credentials that makes his early stud success no great surprise. His race record as a juvenile was somewhat unusual, in that he established himself as one of the seasons better two-year olds without winning a race. After his fourth in the Silver Slipper-GROUP 2 on his third start, his connections clearly decided his potential in major races made it not worth dropping back into Maiden company for what surely would have been an easy win. Thus,FASTNET ROCK ran out his juvenile campaign with seconds in the Skyline Stakes-GROUP 3 and Pago Pago Stakes-GROUP 3,a fourth in the Golden Slipper-GROUP 1 and a third in the AJC Sires Produce Stakes-GROUP 1. He opened his three year old season with a runner up finish in the San Domenico Stakes-GROUP 2.Two weeks later, he finally broke his maiden with a win in the Up and Coming Stakes-GROUP 3 and then followed up by adding the Roman Consul Stakes-GROUP 3.Attempts to stretch him out saw FASTNET ROCK finish second in the Guineas Prelude-GROUP 3,third in the Poseidon Stakes and eighth in the Caulfield Guineas-GROUP 1,the only race of his life other that his debut where he finished out of the first four. Dropped back to sprint trips FASTNET ROCK demonstrated that he had developed into something special, rattling off victories in the Rory’s Jester Stakes-GROUP 3,Linlithgow Stakes-GROUP 2,Lightning Stakes-GROUP 1 and Oakleigh Plate-GROUP 1.His final two starts saw him take seconds in the Newmarket Handicap-GROUP 1 and T.J.Smith Stakes-GROUP 1.With six GROUP victories under his belt for the season,FASTNET ROCK also added honours as Champion Sprinter and Champion Three Year Old. His career was complete and stud career assured with 19 starts,6 wins,7 seconds and 2 thirds for $1,724,100 in prize money. At stud FASTNET ROCK has already produced three GROUP 1 winners in WANTED,IRISH LIGHTS and ROCK CLASSIC and multiple Stakes winners including ROTHESAY,CURVED BALL,STRYKER,HINCHINBROOK,LOVEMELIKEAROCK,LONE ROCK and DINO MAK.As at 12th January 2011 FASTNET ROCK had sired 121 winners of which 14 were Stakes winners and 16 were Stakes placed. The dam of this filly COCO SOVELDA has already produced three winners from three foals to race from relatively unfashionable sires.FASTNET ROCK now gives her the chance to really upgrade the family even further as this filly comes from a family that has already produced the Champion 3yo filly of her generation in SURROUND (please click on this link to view the special video on SURROUND http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QfPX7uwVwYM ) ,GROUP 1 and multiple GROUP winner in BLACK BEAN and other Black type performers in STATION HAND-Winner Carlyon Cup-GROUP 2,MR SANDGROPER-Winner WATC Derby-GROUP 1 and SUPERIOR STAR-Winner Western Australian Oaks-GROUP 2.This is a strong pedigree littered with a Champion and multiple GROUP performers which gives the filly every opportunity to be successful both on the track and off the track at Stud when her racing career concludes.
