Purchased for $42,000 (PLUS GST) this son of the the internationally successful race horse STARCRAFT ticks all the boxes on type and pedigree and meets all the credentials as a future potential stallion. Purchased at a huge discount to that of previous years this type of horse would have normally been out of my bracket however given the outstanding buying conditions that are present currently it is extremely pleasurable to be able to buy a horse that meets all of my criteria and to be able to offer such a horse to the general public at large. There is no doubt that (while acknowledging the difficulties) a successful racing career will ultimately allow this outstanding colt to grace the pastures down the track at one of Australia’s leading studs. His pedigree is certainly impressive as evidenced by his multiple GROUP winning sire in STARCRAFT whose first progeny will hit the race tracks later in the year.STARCRAFT was a genuinely International race horse. He won in Australia, New Zealand, England and France and became one of the second Australian horses to run in a Breeders Cup race in the U.S.The International aspect of his career didn’t stop there. He was born and bred in New Zealand, owned by an Australian, trained to his European victories by an Italian and ridden in those races by a Frenchman, which tends to suggest that he is a horse that does his best whatever the circumstances. STARCRAFT is a tall powerful chestnut who always demanded attention, even when he arrived at Flemington for his first run outside Queensland in the GROUP 3 Debonair Stakes in the summer of 2004.It was the middle of summer and the weather had turned nasty a few days earlier and the competitors were faced with a slow track.STARCRAFT’S trainer Garry Newham had made the decision to bring the horse south on the back of an impressive class six victory at Eagle Farm a month earlier. As STARCRAFT was let off the lead by his handler he made his way down to the start with Under the Bridge, Elvstroem and Cahuita.Given a good run in transit by Matt Pumpa, STARCRAFT showed he was made of the right stuff that day winning the GROUP 3 by nearly two lengths. In his next start that Autumn, STARCRAFT finished second behind Reset in the GROUP 1 Australian Guineas. He then travelled to Sydney for the prestigious Autumn classics where he took all before him winning the GROUP 1 AJC Derby and Chipping Norton also GROUP 1 PLUS the GROUP 2 Tulloch Stakes. After a short spell STARCRAFT was shipped to New Zealand in search of another GROUP 1 win and he duly delivered sprinting brilliantly fresh to claim the Mudgway Stakes (1400m).He made it two from two at his next start in New Zealand in the GROUP 2 Stoney Bridge Stakes (1600m). Later that Spring STARCRAFT returned to Australia, where he finished third in both the Caulfield Stakes (2000m) and Australia’s Premier weight-for-age event the Cox Plate (2040m).His owner Paul Makin was convinced that his horse would get better with maturity and made the bold decision to send him to the Northern hemisphere where his training was taken over by Luca Cumani.Cumani set about preparing STARCRAFT for the Royal Ascot meeting that was to be held at York. His first run in England was the Queen Anne Stakes (1600m) where he ran a brilliant third behind Valixir and Ratki.Stepping out at Sandown at his next start in the GROUP 1 Eclipse Stakes; STARCRAFT ran the worst race of his career.Cumani found a problem with STARCRAFT which he treated for the next few weeks before, taking the horse to France. A change of tactics proved STARCRAFT’S versatility; having sat off the pace in his previous runs, STARCRAFT went to the front and led all the way to win the GROUP 1 Prix du Moulin running the final 1000m in a sensational 57 seconds flat. Cumani then set about preparing STARCRAFT for the Queen Elizabeth Stakes (1600m) at Newmarket. It was to be STARCRAFT’S greatest challenge stepping out against Europe’s best milers in Dubawi and Ratki.Ridden by Hemaire again STARCRAFT hugged the grandstand side rail and ran away with the coveted trophy in a race that Cumani described as the GROUP 1 mile Championship of the year.STARCRAFT retired having raced on 22 occasions on 14 different tracks, going right handed, left handed, on the flat and up a hill. He ran in the soft as well as the firm yet finished with an incredible 11 wins-5 at GROUP 1 level. The colt’s dam (Miss Larnoo) boasts an incredible and impeccable family with GROUP 1 winners in abundance. They include such horses of the caliber of DENISE’S JOY (winner VRC Oaks-GROUP 1), SUNDAY JOY (winner Australian Oaks-GROUP 1 and dam of the very exciting 2yo MORE JOYOUS), TUESDAY JOY (winner STC BMW Stakes-GROUP 1), JOIE DENISE (winner Queensland Oaks-GROUP 1),MISS DANEHILL (winner Queensland Oaks-GROUP 1),ARLINGTON ROAD (winner AJC All Aged Stakes-GROUP 1),EUPHORIA (winner AJC Champagne Stakes-GROUP 1),BENTLEY BISCUIT (winner AJC TJ Smith Stakes-GROUP 1),THORN PARK (winner QTC Stradbroke Hcp-GROUP 1) and PENTASTIC (winner VRC Craiglee Stakes-GROUP 2) but to name a few. The list just continues on and on and also includes other GROUP winners including PRIMUS, MISS MINDEN, CHRISTMAS TREE and JEWEL IN THE CROWN. As previously mentioned with the pedigree above should this colt experience success on the race track our Jewel in the crown will be a future career at stud which would be assured!
